Car hire Menorca

Driving in Menorca is not much different to driving here at home, albeit the side of the road. The majority of road signs are customary all the way through Europe. Motoring laws, parking restrictions and driving in general will be just like what you are used to. A bit of common sense and caution will allow you to enjoy an event free vacation.  Following are a few tips and some important information, which may assist you with car hire in Menorca and ensure some trouble free motoring while on Menorca

When traveling always remember your driving license, you will be refused a vehicle if you are not in possession of a current driving license. Also know that if you have a drink or two while on the plane while traveling to Menorca you may also be refused a vehicle. Drivers must be of at least 25 years of age and have held a full license for at least a 3 year period. When driving a hire car you must always carry the rental document, your current driving license and passport or photocopy of your passport. Seat belts are mandatory whether sitting in the front or back of the vehicle. They will issue, on the spot fines for infarctions. Children under 12 must be seated in the rear of a vehicle. The number of seat belts in the car dictates the number of people the car is allowed to transport; you are not insured to carry any more passengers than the car hire has of allotted seat belts.

The insurance covers all accident damage to the exterior but remember damage to wheels and tires or the interior will not bet. Also breakdown and accidents caused by driver’s negligence will never be included. When obtaining a car hire always asks the specifics of what you will be not be covered for. Everyone has the right to know and you can also ask to see the insurance agreement in regards to the hire company. Do not drink and drive, or drive whilst under the influence of any drugs. This is common sense, but just a reminder that the insurance company may at their discretion cancel the coverage of an accident if it is attributed to either. Should you breakdown, run out of petrol or have an accident, safety triangles must be placed 50 meters to the front and rear of the vehicle, also orange yellow safety jacket must be worn when out of the car. The triangles and safety jackets are usually to be found in the glove box boot or rear of the vehicle.
Be careful where you leave the vehicle, when you sign for it you are then liable for any parking fines and towing charges should the vehicle be towed away by the local police. As is the case anywhere, common sense is the key here. A vehicle illegally parked will be towed away, a yellow triangle sticker with the car registration number written on it should be stuck on the curbstone where the car was parked telling you. It's best not to park where you may cause an obstruction or danger to other road users, even though Menorcan drivers are known to do just that. Often, it seems sometimes to be a prerequisite to obtaining a driving license here. Parking places are also allocated for disabled drivers, sometimes an English badge will be acceptable but NOT ALWAYS its a bit like "on the day" If in doubt and there is a policeman near ask first before taking the chance.
Within the towns parking bays will be outlined by a blue box and a ticket must be obtained from a nearby machine by feeding your money in the slot to obtain a ticket either 30mins, 1 or 2 hours and do not forget to display the ticket in your car window. Unless you want a parking ticket!
